ESL at Chets

Our mission is to share the love of Christ through English language instruction as we encourage student fellowship and foster their spiritual growth. We work with a diverse group of students from different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, some of whom may have little to no English proficiency.

Responsibilities:

Teaching:

  • Demonstrate and model the love of Jesus Christ in every contact with your students.

  • Conduct English language classes using provided books and materials. Adjust lessons based on the progress and needs of the students.

  • Prepare for and teach an ESL class once a week. Ensure lessons are well-planned and engaging.

  • Arrange for another volunteer to teach/assist your class when you can’t be there.

Promote Fellowship:

  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages interaction and relationship-building among students.

  • Contact students by phone, card, or email when they are absent for more than two weeks in a row.

Provide Support:

  • Offer academic and emotional support to students, helping them overcome language barriers and build confidence.

Introduce Spiritual Support:

  • Share the message of Christ and provide spiritual guidance, integrating faith-based discussions and activities into lessons where appropriate.

  • Regularly pray for and with your students.

  • Intentionally share the gospel of Jesus Christ with your students.

Assist with Logistics:

  • Help with registration, assist in assessment interviews and placing students in the appropriate class based on their level, setting up tables for snack time, collecting prayer requests from students, and taking class attendance.

Collaborate with Team:

  • Work closely with other volunteers, teachers, and assistants to plan and deliver effective lessons. Share insights and strategies to improve the learning experience.

  • Support other volunteers to ensure the smooth operation of the ministry.

Attend Meetings:

  • Participate in volunteer meetings twice per semester to discuss progress, share experiences, and plan future activities.

Participate in Training:

  • Attend in-house training sessions and annual regional trainings that provide ESL teacher certification.

Administration:

  • Assist the ESL director/coordinator in recruiting volunteers.

  • Help in arranging training for new volunteers.

  • Participate in recruiting students for the ESL program.

Refreshments/Snacks:

  • Help in providing and coordinating refreshments for classes, fostering fellowship among students and teachers.

Additional Ministry Activities:

  • Help organize banquets, socials, and recognition ceremonies for students and teachers.

  • Plan field trips to places like grocery stores, historical sites, or entertainment centers to teach English in context.

  • Create newsletters to inform students of upcoming events and announcements.

  • Use a closed or private social media group for announcements and communication.

Teacher Qualifications:

  • A strong commitment to the Christian faith and our ESL ministry.

  • A genuine desire to help others and make a positive impact in their lives.

  • While a teaching background is beneficial, it is not required. Training and support will be provided.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with students from diverse backgrounds.

  • A patient and compassionate approach to teaching and supporting students.

  • Ability to adapt lessons and teaching methods to meet the varying needs and progress of students.

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English as a native speaker.

  • Completion of basic ESL training.

  • Commitment to teach for a period of at least one year.
